Elcowire adopts Helios innovation– reducing waste and recovering more copper

Elcowire is taking a major step forward in its sustainability efforts by implementing Helios Innovations’ advanced purification technology in its production. Previously, around one million liters of contaminated process water were sent away as hazardous waste. With on-site purification, 95% of the water can now be recycled back into the process.

By concentrating impurities, the solution also opens up opportunities for future recovery of copper from process water in collaboration with Stena Recycling. With Helios’ solution and Stena’s recycling network, the goal is to recover up to three tonnes of copper per year, while simultaneously reducing water consumption.

“We were impressed by the flexibility of Helios’ method and decided to test it. Helios supported us with sampling and analyses, and based on the results we chose to adopt their solution,” says Jonas Ciardi, Sustainability Manager at Elcowire.

Helios Innovations is behind a new generation of water purification based on low-temperature evaporation at atmospheric pressure. The core of the technology is a cellulose-based packing material that dramatically increases the water’s contact surface, enabling efficient evaporation even at low temperatures. The process allows the liquid to be gradually concentrated as needed and is particularly well suited for industrial process water and liquid hazardous waste, including high levels of TOC and heavy metals.

For Elcowire, this results in a 20-fold reduction in waste, reducing the need for vacuum truck transports from twice a week to just once a month. The reduced water consumption is equivalent to the daily water use of around 20 people.

“We are very proud of the collaboration with Elcowire, and that this installation is the first we have carried out where we can not only reduce a customer’s waste volumes but also recycle all purified water back into Elcowire’s production. The fact that we also have the potential to extract value from the waste makes this a true win-win-win case for the environment and everyone involved,” says Jonatan Persson, CEO of Helios Innovations.

The implementation is expected to both strengthen Elcowire’s environmental performance and create new opportunities for resource-efficient production.

Elcowire has signed a groundbreaking agreement with Meva Energy to supply 9 MW of renewable biogas to its Helsingborg facility in Sweden.

This deal makes Elcowire the first copper wire producer globally to fully replace fossil gas with fossil-free energy in its production process, setting a new standard for sustainable metallurgy. The partnership addresses a critical challenge in the industry, as copper melting has traditionally relied on fossil fuels to achieve the high temperatures required for metal production.

Paul Gustavsson, CEO of Elcowire, says: “This partnership with Meva Energy is a game-changer for us. By being the first in the world to adopt fossil-free biogas for copper melting, Elcowire is not only advancing our own sustainability efforts but also setting a new benchmark for the entire metallurgy sector. We are proud to lead this transformation toward a greener, more sustainable future.”

Meva Energy will design, own, and operate an on-site energy plant at Elcowire’s Helsingborg facility, providing 9 MW of renewable biogas over the 15-year period.
